Females don't fall for flashy males
Advertisement
In the marine world, attracting a mate can be really tricky. A new study on three-spined stickleback fish has found that females do not always trust males who emit strong sexual signals.
Three-spined stickleback is a species of fish in which breeding males develop a red throat in order to attract females. Sticklebacks can breed several times over the course of the summer, but pay a heavy price since few survive for another year.
Now, in the study, evolutionary biologists, from Glasgow and Exeter universities, found "initial flashy displays" by males were not always successful at attracting a mate.
The study said some females waited until sexual signals were more honest as weaker males exhausted themselves with "shows" they could not sustain, reports The BBC.
Lead researcher Dr Jan Lindström found that the honesty of mating displays could vary dramatically over time.
Dr Lindström said: "Honesty in males mostly depends on how many opportunities there are to breed.
"If males can breed now but the future promises little in terms of further matings, all males should immediately reveal their ''true colours'' - so that the signals they produce are a reliable indication of their quality.
"But if males can potentially breed several times over the course of a breeding season, it pays those in best condition to keep some of their strength in reserve.
"In contrast, those males in poorer condition cannot afford to delay seeking a mate, so must signal as hard as they can - with the result that at the start of the breeding season a female cannot reliably judge a male''s quality from his signal.
"However, as time goes on, the poorer condition males must drop out of the competition, leaving only the better ones and making it easier for a female to pick a high quality mate."
Dr Lindström added: "We found that the redness of the males changed over the summer, with all starting out red but only those in good condition being able to sustain their colour.
"As predicted by our model, females seemed to ignore the redness of a male when choosing a mate in early summer, and only developed a preference for redder males later, once it became a more honest signal of a male''s quality."
The study will be published in the scientific journal, American Naturalist.

Ram Gopal Varma has a secret daughter!
Ram Gopal Varma is one big magnet for controversies. Now, what can be a bigger controversy than the whispers of a secret daughter out of wedlock for the Bollywood director?
A news daily has claimed that RGV, the bold director of Bollywood, has an illegitimate daughter in Hyderabad. Although news abound about him having a family in Hyderabad, the filmmaker has always been tight-lipped about it.
However, the outspoken director has time and again let slip publicly that he doesn`t believe in the institution of marriage.
Could this be a hint at the truth behind this new development? His daughter is reportedly in her early twenties and is studying medicine.
If this is the truth, why not be your bold self and admit the fact in public, Ramu?
He is reportedly shooting in Hyderabad for ‘Rakta Charitra’ and he met with his family last week.

No unbuttoning jeans on ramp for Akshay: Twinkle
Advertisement
This time he sashayed down the ramp for Salman Khan's "Being Human" show at the ongoing HDIL India Couture Week here Tuesday. Dressed casually in slim fit jeans and a smart jacket with aviator glares, Akshay stopped on the ramp, posed in front of her and smilingly cautioned her not to unbutton his jeans again.
"I didn't know that the gesture would create such an uproar. I don't want to go to jail again, so no such retakes for that shot," a smiling Twinkle told IANS.
In April, Akshay had got Twinkle to unbutton his jeans for a fashion show when he walked the ramp as a brand ambassador. The act had put the couple in trouble - Akshay was summoned by police while his wife had to spend a few hours in jail.
Twinkle, an actress-turned-interior designer, was later released on bail.

Abhishek to don politician's garb in Paa
Advertisement
After chic and cool in Dostana, Abhishek Bachchan goes for a makeover in R. Balakrishnan's Paa -- the actor will be seen mostly in white kurta-pyjamas in 90 percent of the movie, in which he is playing a politician.
Abhishek was quite content with the clothes he was made to wear for the movie.
"It was a welcome change to not have so many different costumes. And most importantly it was the requirement of the film", said the actor.
To ensure that Abhishek's clothes look sparkling clean, the director had ordered 10 sets of kurta-pyjamas.
"Abhishek plays a young forward-thinking politician who follows in the footsteps of his father (played by Paresh Rawal)," said director R. Balakrishnan, fondly called Balki.
Paa is a sensitive story about the relationship between a father and son, who suffers from Progeria, which causes premature ageing.
The movie also stars Amitabh Bachchan and Vidya Balan in key roles.

Aishwarya Rai refused reality show for films
Advertisement
"A recent news story issued by a channel suggested Aishwarya Rai was ousted by Madhuri Dixit for one of their reality shows, citing money as an issue. We would wish to clarify that this is an act of fiction, fact being that Aishwarya, who is known to be a thorough professional, had to refuse the show on account of her commitment to films," her publicist said in a press statement.
The show is now being judged by Rani Mukerji along with dance guru Shiamak Davar.Aishwarya is currently busy shooting Sanjay Leela's Guzaarish.
"Her movies like Endhiran, Action Replay and Ravana are all nearing completion, so the subject of money and costing never did arise as discussions did not go beyond schedules and dates.
"The proposal had come to Aishwarya through the Moranis (the show producers) and even Shiamak pushed Aishwarya to do the show, but the dates could just not be worked out," said the publicist.

Shahrukh Khan finally crosses over to Hollywood
Advertisement
Even as Shah Rukh readies to star in Danny Boyle’s ‘Bombay Velvet’ to be directed by Anurag Kashyap, legendary Hollywood screenplay writer Paul Schrader has hinted at casting SRK in his next film with Mumbai’s infamous underworld as the backdrop.
According to reports, Schrader, writer of classics like ‘Taxi Driver’ and ‘American Gigolo’, has apparently tied up with Mushtaq Shiekh andAnubhav Sinha to make a USD10 million-budgeted cops and mafia film titled ‘Xtrme City’.
The film has been announced by David Weisman’s ‘Vanishing Cinema LLC’ in unison with Shiekh and Sinha.
It is believed that SRK has almost given a nod for the same, thanks to his proximity with Mushtaq Shiekh, who did the screenplays of Khan’s films like ‘OSO’, ‘Billu’ and is also working on SRK’s under-production sci-fi thriller ‘Ra1’.
To be targeted at both domestic and international markets, ‘Xtrme City’ will be an action thriller set in the “brutal, impenetrable, criminal orbit of Mumbai”, say its makers.
“Spending time in India and working with a Bollywood talent like Shiekh has inspired and excited me to make a film accessible and meaningful to both Indian and American cultures,” said Schrader in a statement issued to the media. (ANI)

Does Salman Khan misbehave?
"Salman has always been very protective. He has been there for me whenever I needed him. That's partly to do with the fact that my sister Karisma is very close friends with Salman and also his favourite co-star," said Kareena, who features with him in Main Aurr Mrs Khanna.
Just how caring Salman can be was proven to Kareena when they were shooting a romantic song on the Phi Phi Beach in Thailand for his home production Main Aur Mrs Khanna, releasing Friday.
The beach is not sandy but pebbled. And Kareena had to go barefeet into the water with Salman. But before she could reach even halfway, she cut her foot badly on a sharp pebble.
"Kareena doubled up in pain and almost fell to the ground. Salman reflexively reached for her and swooped her into his arms. And he carried her to the water," said a source.
The shot has been retained, although it was never meant to be part of the film.
"Throughout the shooting you could see the special bonding that they had. But that day on Phi Phi Island it got really special," said film's director Prem Soni.
"We came much further into the land from the sea than we imagined. When it was time to go back, we realised we had to walk through the pebbled beach and wade into almost head-deep water before reaching our boat. We had to do it. Otherwise we'd have to spend the night on the beach without food or water.
"Kareena was in this long gown and barefoot. She was in pain. Before we knew it he swooped her into his arms and carried her into a boat. It was a very romantic-looking moment and we couldn't let it go," he added.

Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan Married?
Katrina has denied the news and now Salmans father Salim Khan says he has been misquoted by the interviewer. “Salim sahab has already said that he has been misquoted or perhaps the reporter who was taking the interview misunderstood. Let’s give the reporter a benefit of doubt that it was a mistake,” she told CNN-IBN.
“I definitely thinks that Saamna should issue a clarification if not an apology because it’s not a small thing. It’s not the news of a movie or some endorsement that one has signed. It’s a big think to make a mistake about somebody’s life like this. And I think a clarification is a must because I know for a fact that Salim sahab has definitely not said anything and one should be careful while reporting for such a major newspaper and while writingarticles,” she added.
She said that her managers have spoken to the editors at Saamna and that they were assured of a corrigendum.

It remains to be seen whether this scene does wonders for the movie or ends up as another of those marketing stunts so common in Bollywood.

I was terrified to work with Big B: Jacqueline Fernandez
Advertisement
Sri Lankan beauty Jacqueline Fernandez calls her role in 'Aladin' "a fairy-tale come true" but the debutante says that the idea of sharing screen with Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan was "intimidating and scary".
"I have grown up on Amitabh Bachchan's films and my father is a huge fan. But working with Big B in my very first film? The thought was intimidating, scary and to be honest I was little bit hesitant initially," the model-turned-actress said in an interview. However, Jacqueline's fear vanished after meeting Bachchan on the sets.
"He is a perfect gentleman with an amazing sense of humour. It was my first movie and I was nervous but I became confident after working with Big B. He made everything so easy," she says adding that she sought her father's advice before saying yes to the project.
"It was not that I needed convincing because I always dreamt of becoming a Bollywood actress but I was scared. I kept asking my father 'Can I do it, it is such a huge investment' and my father was like 'Go for it, you will be a fool to let the opportunity pass by'," Jacqueline says describing her last moment jitters.
The former Miss Sri Lanka, who also tried her luck for Miss Universe title, came to Mumbai on a modelling assignment two-years-ago. The actress auditioned for the role in 'Aladin', never thinking that she will be selected to play the female lead of "Jasmine" in the fantasy movie opposite Bachchan.
The film, which releases October 30 is a modern day take on the classic story of the magic lamp. Actor Reitesh Deshmukh plays the title role while Amitabh Bachchan has don the hat of a modern day genie in the movie, which also stars Sanjay Dutt as the evil 'Ring Master'.
Jacqueline says that despite the language problem the part came easy to her because it is very close to her real life persona.
"Jasmine is a very normal person. There is nothing strange about her. She is very sweet. She is just like me. On the very first day Sujoy (film's director) told me 'Jacky don't try hard, just be yourself' and I was like 'Okay, that's easy," she says with a smile.
Ask her about the whole cultural difference and the language problems in shifting base to Mumbai, the actress says that part was easy because she has always been fascinated by Indian culture.
"Language is not an issue because as an actor you are expected to absorb the culture, the character that you are playing and it was easy for me because I did not take it as a job. I have always been fascinated by India and its culture. Learning about it was not a chore but something that I enjoyed," says Jacqueline.
The actress was born in Sri Lanka but her family moved to Bahrain because of the civil war in the island nation.Jacqueline, who writes for a newspaper in Sri Lanka and is the brand Ambassador for 'Habitat for Humanity' for her country, hopes to visit her native land after the release of 'Aladin'.
"I am hoping for a positive response for the movie and then I plan to go back and meet our relatives there. We have not visited Sri Lanka for 30 years," she says. The actress has no fixed plans about her acting career but says she is loving her time in Bollywood.Jacqueline has already bagged another movie with Nikhil Advani, where she will be sharing screen with Reitesh Deshmukh once again.

Shilpa Shetty sued for six mn pounds
Advertisement
Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty has been sued for £ 6 million by the former boss of her newly acquired restaurant chain, on grounds of unfair dismissal.
Jamal Hirani, 42, founder of fast-food chain 'Tiffinbites' is claiming that he was forced out to make way for the star and had earlier filed a lawsuit in an industrial tribunal claiming more than £ 1.5 million, reported London Evening Standard online.
He has now filed a £ 6 million lawsuit in High Court, based on the 30 per cent of the firm he previously owned.
Hirani alleges that he was forced out by colleagues in a process that led to the firm closing and opening under a new name, the V8 Gourmet Group.
"They manufactured false accusations against me. This ultimately was my company and I have been removed. I understand that since I have left Shilpa Shetty has invested in the business," said Hirani.
Shetty, 34 who became a household name in Britain after winning the reality show Celebrity Big Brother, recently became the company's co-chairwoman after she and fiance Raj Kundra paid £ 6 million to buy a 33 per cent stake in it.
A spokesman for the actress reacted to the controversy by saying, "The case refers to events that happened before Shilpa and Raj joined. She was always aware this tribunal was coming up and hopes for a fair outcome."

Bollywood is jealous of me: Priyadarshan
Advertisement
The helmer of superhit comedies like Hera Pheri and Malamaal Weekly said that despite the unrequited tag he has no plans to wash his hands off commercial comedies.
"The whole problem is that, unfortunately I have been successful. In the history of Indian cinema I am the only South Indian director who has survived for 12 years and 25 films in Bollywood. It is jealousy that leads people to tarnish you," Priyadarshan told PTI.
The filmmaker who claims to be the "only successful South Indian director" in the industry said that he finds commercial cinema a tougher genre than off-beat ones.
"Just because I won the National Award, does not mean I plan to become the next Shyam Benegal or Adoor. Realistic non-commercial films offer you a lot more liberty as a director than a usual film," said he.
"On the other hand while making a commercial film you are constantly thinking, will the mass audience like this, will they accept this? It is a lot more difficult to make a typical Bollywood film than a realistic film," says Priyadarshan who was in the capital for the Delhi International Arts festival.
"I don't mind any tags until they pay me well," said the filmmaker who along with his good friend, actor Mohanlal created cult hits in Malayalam like Chitram and Kilukkam.
Priyadarshan whose next film is a typical Bollywood laugh riot De Dana Dhan starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, believes that he is doing a social service through his comedy films.
"I am actually doing social service by making comedies, because making people laugh is the most difficult thing to do. When people come and watch a film of mine, I am helping them forget their troubles, isn't that social service," said Priyadarshan adding that he now wants to strike a balance between his commercial and off-beat ventures.
"I enjoy doing commercial cinema and it gives me fame and money while the other gets me recognition. I want both. I am currently shooting for a film with Ajay Devgan and Akshaye Khanna, about Bihar and there is a film with Aamir Khan about AIDS," said Priyadarshan.
After 25 years in the industry, the filmmaker is happy that due recognition has finally come his way and says that his film was an attempt to showcase the true India, which in his words is not "a slum, like some people would like to believe."
"India is a cultural superpower, a nuclear superpower. It is not a slum like some people would like to believe. When I was making Kanjivaram, I wanted to make a film that would showcase India's heritage, it's culture and history," said Priyadarshan.

My Mom's competing with me: Rakhi Sawant
Advertisement
Are you on talking terms with your mom?
No, I didn't even know she was doing BB3. I only got to know when the channel aired the first episode. We both live our separate lives. But I'm happy she's getting independent.
Why do you think she agreed to be on the show?
For money. I'm glad she's doing this because now she will value me. She will realise how hard one has to put in to earn money. Also I think she is trying to compete with me, because I've another reality show on a different channel. People will definitely watch Bigg Boss because my mom is on it. The channel will use her to get people to watch the show.
Despite your fallout, you have been sending out SMSes to save her?
Yes, because all said and done, she's my mother at the end of the day. I'm unhappy with the way she's being treated. The contestants have alienated her and are mocking her because of the way she talks. She's just a normal person. It saddens me to see her go through this.
Anyone particular you're upset with?
Yes. I don't like how Tanaaz treats her. It's funny that she claimed she didn't know my mom when she has met her a few times. I didn't treat her mom this way when I met her at their wedding anniversary.
What goes through your mind when you watch her on the show?
I pray she has the strength to pull through it. I wish I had a chance to expose these other contestants. You can't treat elder people like this. She is someone's mother and doesn't live a lavish life like everyone else.
